“No institution holds more power over the future of the American economy and the value of our savings than the Federal Reserve,” said Dr. Paul.
Many US politicians, most notably Rand Paul, have been pushing for legislation to make the Federal Reserve accountable to the American people. The Federal Reserve's actions often go unchecked, even when they cause economic adversity for the American middle class. Since 2008, there have been clear cases of the Federal Reserve using its autonomy to make questionable decisions that threaten the livelihood of the American economy. A Federal Reserve audit could expose some issues and make the Federal Reserve more accountable.
Rand Paul’s Audit the Fed Bill
Ron Paul, who began serving in Congress in 1976, has been one of the strongest proponents of holding the Federal Reserve accountable. His son, Rand Paul, has continued to use his position in Congress to attempt to hold the Federal Reserve to higher standards. The Federal Reserve’s monetary policies have been exempt from an audit since 1978. However, following the 2008 Great Financial Crisis, more people have become skeptical of the Federal Reserve and feel that the public should know more about its actions.
Rand Paul reintroduced his Audit the Fed Bill at the beginning of 2024. If this bill becomes a law, the Government Accountability Office could audit the Fed's transactions with foreign banks or governments and learn more about its monetary policy decisions.
