I agree with this, but I also believe that if we are going to force healthy meals & snacks for poor families on SNAP which cost more, then give re-evaluate the cost of foods and increase SNAP benefits accordingly. Let's face it, $200 worth of groceries does not purchase 1 months worth of healthy food for anyone anywhere in this nation! Hamburger is now at $4.99 per lb and eggs are still at $4 to $5 per dozen.

I watched my grandkids a couple of days last week and honestly, I have no clue how my daughter and son-in-law can afford to feed these constant grazers!

SNAP was never intended to be the sole means of feeding a family. It was meant to supplement other resources a family have. SNAP is Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

An apple costs less than a coke. Boxes of raisins are no more than a bag of chips. Mostly families need to be educated.

As a former Economic assistance worker for DHHS, I am well aware of the NAME CHANGE made to the Foodstamp program by USDA rather than raising the amount of food assistance for our nation's poorest families. That stated, it used to be a shameful thing to be on assistance as opposed to these idiots purposely having more and .ore kids to receive more assistance from the government and then make shameful tiktok videos bragging about their purchases using SNAP. People used to use the benefits temporarily until they could get back on their feet. Now it has become a generational lifestyle and the programs encourage dependence and they know this.

However, for those who have no other options due to disability or elderly, the program is not sufficient and it is disgusting that these people are unable to purchase enough good healthy foods to provide the nutrients they require monthly. That is the point that I was making.

I knew people on the commodities program. Was friends with single moms that struggled to budget foods for holidays that fell at the ofthe month. I don't seem that the program has ever delivered the amount of food you are thinking about. SNAP is not the only program they have access to. There are lunch programs for kids, meals on wheels for seniors, and WIC. It is not like we are ignoring the need. I have to say the recent videos of women spending $2-3k worth on benefits is a bit disgusting. I don't know their stories but they sure don't seem to be ashamed of it.

It's funny that people now don't understand how to eat poor. I grew up with beans for most dinners. Meat used a lot for flavoring or stretched with other ingredients into patties. Quick breads like biscuits or cornbread to go with the meal. It would be really smart for people to learn how to cook this way. It comes in handy when money is tight.

Great article. Healthier organic food is more filling, whereas junk food makes you hungrier faster and makes you want to eat more. That's why, in European countries and even in Asia, we can eat relatively small amounts of food and still feel full. When we stopped eating junk food and processed meals and began buying organic or from a trusted farmer, my entire family began to notice that they did not require as much food to fill their bellies.

The problem with this argument is that there is an entire generation that thinks food staples come in a bag or box. Eliminating home economics courses (aka life skills class) and creating a culture of convenience foods has made toxic dining acceptable and desirable. Case in point: breakfast in the classroom. It’s nothing more than pick your poison: sugar, carbs, empty carbs, preservatives. It’s NOT food if it has an exponential ingredient list. Soda pop, chips, cookies and candy. Bag of beans. Bag of rice. Can of chicken. Can of carrots. Can of tuna. Bag of noodles. Bag of peas. Bunch of bananas. They could make the food stamps work if they knew how to make meals. Before you attack me- did YOU live off government cheese? It’s not actually cheese but I survived.

As much as I hate to say it, maybe the government ought to be looking at safe levels of sugar in food, like they do with coloring and other ingredients... That would contribute to health as well! I've consciously tried to cut back on sugar, and holy shit, when you try a sugared drink compared to unsweetened.... WOW!!! I couldn't believe how sweet some things have gotten. It's ridiculous that I even have to think that!!!

I completely agree with cutting out the sugars. The issue I have is that unless you are purchasing fruits and veggies from a farmers market or growing them yourself you are buying produce sprayed with APEEL. This is so toxic and can not be washed off the produce. Recently, the corrupt FDA agreed to allow organic produce to also be sprayed with this substance that will expand the window of "freshness" and less waste of spoiled food, but at the coat of our health. If they are allowing organic produce to be sprayed with toxins, the produce is no longer organic!

It is not enough to remove dyes from foods. Big deal, this mostly applies to candies and sugared cereals, and things we should not be feeding ourselves or our children anyway. What I want to see is for the FDA to stop allowing all the toxins disguised as preservatives and fillers in our foods. I would like to go to the store and purchase canned foods that do not include these substances. I plant a garden every year and can it and the only preservative I add to my green bean, peas, carrots, etc is 1/2 tsp of salt and then put the jars in a pressure canner for 60-90 minutes. There are things that I can't or don't want to can myself such as creamed soups I use to make casseroles and I would love to have the choice to purchase these items that don't have crap in them.
